The switch itself needs neither a battery nor a wired connection: pressing it generates a small burst of electricity, enough to send a wireless signal to a receiver wired between the power source and the light or fan.
That means a switch can be mounted anywhere, moved later without cutting into a wall, or added to a room that never had a switch point planned for it.
One receiver supports up to 10 self-powered switches, a 32-bit encrypted signal sent three times per press for reliable delivery, and no batteries to ever replace. Useful for adding a switch to a new location during a renovation, or anywhere running a physical wire back to a switch box would be expensive or impractical.
