Find the right timer switch
A standard digital timer runs the same schedule every day, suited to water heaters and appliances with a fixed routine. An astronomical timer recalculates sunrise and sunset for your location and adjusts automatically, better suited to outdoor and security lighting that shouldn't run on a fixed clock as days get longer or shorter through the year.
What to check before you buy
Match the amp rating to what you're switching. Most household lighting circuits and single-phase pumps fall within a 16 to 25A range. Look for second-level precision if you're automating irrigation or motor control rather than simple on/off lighting. If you're working off a 12V DC supply, such as a solar setup, inverter, or vehicle circuit, look specifically for our 12V DC timer switches and DC timers below, they're wired and rated differently from the AC models above.
