Most gear built for AA batteries expects a steady 1.5V output for the whole discharge curve, which a normal 3.7V lithium cell simply can't deliver without a built-in voltage regulator doing the conversion internally. Attempting to charge the wrong chemistry in a lithium-specific charger isn't just ineffective, it can be unsafe, so the distinction matters beyond just getting the right runtime.
